- Building Trust: The Right Way of Leadership in Organizations

Can you handle the truth for your business?

Can you handle the truth for your business?

“You can’t handle the truth!

The unforgettable scene from the movie “a Few Good Men”

with Jack Nicholson brings to light an unfortunate reality: many of us can’t handle the truth. Often, we create illusions and put up walls to avoid telling the truth about what is really going on in our lives. Think about it, people have an incredible capacity for self-deception. We see what we want to see, not what really exists.

I am often confronted with this reality when working with business owners. It never ceases to amaze me that
many of these professionals don’t
measure their performance or results on a consistent basis. Walking blindly, they simply sink into the routine of everyday life simply hoping for something better.
In a recent meeting with a local businessman, he admitted that he had no idea how his company would perform this year compared to last year. He explained to me that he will have a better “visual picture” once the last years financial statements are completed …
… sometime in the summer!

That which is not measured, is not improved!

Why don’t business owners measure their results more often and more accurately?

Time is definitely a factor. Many owners are suffocating from their oppressive schedule! They are caught up in working on their business while not having any time to work on their business. Although most would agree with how important it is to measure their performance and results in order to improve them, few of them have the time… Or rather I should say are willing to “do” the time!

But there is something much deeper hidden here.

I’m convinced that the #1 reason most owners don’t track their business more often is because they’re scared of what this little bit of research can reveal. Let’s be honest… We all have areas where we feel incompetent and insecure. (at least those with some measure of self-awareness.) We have suspicions about areas of our business that may need improvement. We speculate about what might help us get better results. But suspicion and speculation are not the wisest way to grow and prosper a business. We need to make the transition from guesses to measurements.

The truth about your business

Serious business people are not afraid of the truth.

Although often harsh, the truth allows you to face the weaknesses of your business and your management style. If you are truly committed to growth and results, you must be willing to face the hard truth that is revealed by accurately measuring your performance. It’s the most effective way to improve! So you can handle the truth! When was the last time you had an objective view of your business? Do you measure your performance and results?

If not, why not? If so, what are you measuring?

In the meantime, remember this…

The biggest space in the world is the space for improvement!
